Cysts on ovaries may form either on the interior or the exterior of the ovaries. They are basically tiny sac-like structures filled with a fluid. These sacs are usually a part of the natural menstrual cycle. They usually disappear on their own. They can be a sign of hormonal imbalance or even a normal part of the reproductive cycle. Sometimes, what happens is, these cysts don’t disappear when they have to, but instead they enlarge and remain on the ovaries. When this happens, they cause immense pain and discomfort. How are cysts on ovaries caused?

There are two ovaries, one on each side of the uterus. The ovaries are the producers of female hormones and eggs. The ovaries are small in size, about the shape of an almond. The eggs which are produced by the ovaries grow in a small sac called the follicle. These eggs which grow inside the follicle are released into the uterus every month. They may or may not be fertilized. If the egg is fertilized it develops into a fetus. The empty follicle dissolves into the hormones and gets ready for the next cycle. This is how the normal cycle usually occurs; problems tend to arise if the egg is not released by the ovaries. The sac may swell and continue to form eggs. Sometime they swell to a large size (several inches) and may start to bleed. If this happens they become very painful. This is how cysts on ovaries are made.

What happens if the cysts on ovaries burst?

As already mentioned, most of the cysts on ovaries are not harmful. They rarely cause pain and other problems. Also, they tend to disappear on their own without any treatment or medication of any kind. In some cases, however, these cysts on ovaries cause a lot of pain and other problems. If the cysts grow too big, they tend to burst. The membrane that surrounds the cyst, holding the fluid in, is very thin. This is why it is capable of rupturing if the cyst enlarges too much. When this happens there are a lot of symptoms which can be noticed

• The first thing which will happen is excess bleeding. When a cyst ruptures, the patient will experience bleeding which is in no way related to the regular menstrual periods which they have.
• Pain: This is the second most commonly noticed symptom. Patients experience immense pain in the pelvic area. The pain caused by cysts on ovaries can be long lasting and very severe.
• Irregular menstrual periods: Patients tend to have irregular periods. Irregular in the sense that there is no particular timing- periods may be too early, too late or they can occur with an unusually light or unusually heavy flow.
• Frequent urination: Patients who have ruptured ovarian cysts usually feel the urge to urinate more frequently than normal.
